FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
What products do you offer?
We offer specialty single-origin and blended roasted whole-bean coffee. Since I'm just a small home-based roaster, my offerings are limited at the moment. Occasionally something interesting might pop up.
Why do you not offer dark roasts?
Specialty coffees from around the world offer very distinct aromas and flavours and these are generally more expensive coffees due to the labour that goes into producing and processing them. When roasting a coffee dark, many of these qualities that we pay for are roasted out and the result is a roasty flavoured coffee that has lost much of its uniqueness.
Our espresso blend is roasted medium-dark to allow for better extraction.
Filtered brew or espresso?
In my opinion, to taste the interesting qualities and notes of the coffees, filter brewing is best. I like to use a Hario Switch or Hario V60, using 18g of ground coffee to 300g of 94 degree Celsius water.
These coffees also work really well for espresso too, but since lighter coffees are harder to extract due to the short water contact time, I recommend using a higher brew temperature and/or a finer grind. An even extraction with minimal channeling is obviously very important too.
We offer an espresso blend that's roasted a little darker to allow for easier extraction.
How do I know if my espresso is under extracted?
It tastes really sour.
How long will my roasted coffee last?
Coffee's flavours are optimal around 7 days for medium-light roasts, or 14 days for light roasts, and up to one month after the roast date. After about 6 weeks coffee goes stale and tastes flat.
Unopened bags are still drinkable for 6 months (some say 12 months but I wouldn't go that far), although the best characteristics of the coffee are mostly gone. I recommend storing coffee in an airtight, opaque container in a cool, dry place. Refrigeration introduces moisture and freeze only if vacuum packed.
Why isn't the coffee I saw here before not being offered anymore?
Coffee is a seasonal crop and whatever I'm able to offer depends on what I'm able to source. Try some of our other coffees!
